Churchill Downs slapped with fine

KENTUCKY -- As reported by the Business First of Louisville: "The Kentucky Horse Racing Authority today fined Churchill Downs Inc. $15,000 for track officials' role in the hiring of assistant starter Clinton Beck to handle the thoroughbred Pyro during the May 3 Kentucky Derby.

"Downs officials allegedly hired Beck to handle Pyro at the urging trainer Steve Asmussen, although the KHRA concluded that there was no evidence of inappropriate behavior by Beck while he loaded Pyro into the starting gates.

"Churchill Downs officials agreed to the penalty, although the company admits to no wrongdoing, the KHRA reported in a news release..."
