Christchurch Casino To Host New Zealand's Premier Poker Competition

14 February 2006

NEW ZEALAND – (PRESS RELEASE) -- Some of the world's greatest poker players are expected to converge on Christchurch Casino this April to take part in New Zealand's premier poker competition.

The New Zealand Poker Championships will be held over the week 1 8 April 2006.

Around 150 players from around the world are expected to enter. Among them, renowned Kiwi poker player Lee Nelson, who recently won the Aussie Millions poker tournament.

The winner of the Championships will take away the lions share of a $200,000 prize pool and receive a seat at this year's World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.

Christchurch Casino's Gaming Manager, Peter Arbuckle, is in no doubt that the competition will attract some of the world's best poker players.

"Not only is this New Zealand's only nationwide poker competition with the richest prize pool, it is one of only a few competitions in the world with a seat at the World Series up for grabs," says Peter.

"This is one of the few seats for the World Series that has been offered in the Southern Hemisphere. With a multi-million dollar prize pool, the World Series of Poker is the ultimate in international poker competitions and we are really excited by this honor."

The week will begin on Saturday, 1 April 2006 with a '$20,000 Celebrity Challenge for Charity' where some of New Zealand's most famous faces will battle around a poker table. The winning celebrity will donate their $20,000 winnings to their selected charity.

The following day the Canterbury Championships will be held with the South Island Champs following on Wednesday, 5 April. The New Zealand Poker Championships will be held over Friday, 7 and Saturday, 8 April 2006.

A media tournament will also be held where Christchurch reporters will be able to get even with their competition around the poker table.

"This is going to be a great time to be at Christchurch Casino we have some of New Zealand's most well-known bands, including the Mermaids with Joe Cotton and Anika Moa playing throughout the week and some of this country's big names are set to play in the celebrity tournament," says Peter Arbuckle.

"It's going to be a lot of fun and a chance for Cantabrians to come along and see some of the world's best poker aces in action,' he added.

"For kiwi poker players the New Zealand Poker Championships is the crème de la crème of home competitions. We have some extraordinarily talented poker players here and we are looking forward to seeing them perform against the world¹s best. This will be an exhilarating competition," Peter Arbuckle concluded.
