Christchurch Casino escapes conviction

14 March 2007

NEW ZEALAND – As reported by the New Zealand Press: "Christchurch Casinos has escaped conviction in an unprecedented prosecution for allowing an under-age person in a gambling area.

"In the Christchurch District Court yesterday, Judge Phil Moran accepted the effect of conviction would outweigh culpability – the casino having a previously unblemished record – and discharged it without conviction on a charge of allowing a person under 20 to remain on the premises.

"The casino is the first to be prosecuted in New Zealand by its regulator and is the first prosecution related to the harm-minimisation provisions of the Gambling Act.

"…The judge said it was clear the casino took its obligations seriously, but there should be some financial penalty, and he ordered it to pay $1000 to the Salvation Army."
