Choctaws continue push for off-reservation casino

27 February 2008

MISSISSIPPI -- As reported by the Mississippi Clarion-Ledger: "The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians will continue to push for an off-reservation casino resort, but a project proposed for Jackson County is unlikely to gain approval during Gov. Haley Barbour's tenure.

They also said the Choctaws failed to show the casino is necessary for the tribe's benefit.

"'We think BIA made a mistake,' Denson said in an interview at the state Capitol. 'The BIA is (supposed) to protect tribes. I didn't think they were observant of that ideology, especially when we see decreasing federal funds.'..."
