Chinese Officials Suspected of Gambling Away Millions

CHINA – As reported by the Chongquing Daily: "A pair of city officials in western China are suspected of gambling away more than 100 million yuan (US$12 million) of public money in a Macau casino, official newspapers reported Monday.

"Propaganda department chief Zhang Zonghai and Telecoms Bureau director Zhang Xiaochuan have been fired from the posts in the city of Chongqing and placed under house arrest, the Chongqing Daily said.

"The two took a total of 200 million yuan (US$24 million) in embezzled funds to Macau on several occasions and gambled in the Lisboa casino's VIP rooms, the report said. They lost more than half, it said, without giving other details…"
