Chinese Monks Play Vegas

12 January 2000

The Shaolin Monks of China will appear for the first time in the U.S. next month at the MGM Grand Hotel/Casino. They will demonstrate their ancient and mystical skills in a show called "Masters of Shaolin" that runs Feb. 11-23.

Known internationally for their physical undertakings, the Shaolin Monks rarely leave their secluded monastery in China.

They strive for harmony between body and spirit, blending martial arts skills with the beauty and grace of Eastern philosophy. By using Chinese weapons, ordinary objects like bricks and hammers and the strength of their own bodies and minds, the monks are able to accomplish unbelievable physical achievements through their philosophy of living.

The Shaolin Monks have been a part of the Chinese culture and tradition for over 1,500 years. They developed their special martial arts movements to protect the monastery against animals and pirates and to defend the empire against internal and external enemies.

During the prime of the Shaolin Monastery, 1300 years ago, there were 1,500 monks living there.

Today, the new generations of Shaolin fighting monks are reviving the lost art, in addition to developing the Shaolin Kung Fu. They are traveling to the U.S. to generate financial support to renovate and preserve their ancient monastery, which is in dire need.

Tickets for the nightly performances at MGM Grand are $42.50 plus tax.
