Chinese Illegal Gambling Operators Arrested

CHINA – As reported by the China Post: "An additional 149 people were apprehended for involvement in 135 illegal gambling cases whose outcomes are tied to the final result of the March 20 presidential election, the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) reported yesterday.

"The police launched Wednesday the nationwide 'Leiting (Thunderbolt) 30' campaign and rounded up the suspects over the past two days.

"…Underground gambling syndicates mushroomed along with the advent of the presidential election throughout the island. The bookies accept various kinds of bets, including those applying the Hong Kong horse racing lottery mechanism or the Mark Six Game to offer bets.

"…The CIB officials were tipped off in recent months that wagers on the outcome of the presidential election have become more rampant islandwide, particularly in central and southern Taiwan, the power base of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party…"
