Chinese Gamblers Killed by Lightning

HANGZHOU, China – As reported by the Straits Times: "Seventeen people seeking shelter under some trees were killed when they were struck by lightning in a town in east China's Zhejiang province.

"Eleven of them died instantly while six others died in hospital later, state media reported yesterday.

"….According to local newspapers, the victims had originally gathered in the area to gamble. They retreated to a tent near the trees when it started to rain heavily, the reports said.

"…Villagers told local newspapers that the victims had been meeting in the area over the past month to gamble. Some sessions involved high stakes…"
