Chicago Mayor Mocks Illinois Governor19 May 2004CHICAGO, Illinois – As reported by the Chicago Sun-Times: "The Land of Lincoln is already the "Land of Gambling," Mayor Daley said Tuesday, mocking Gov. Blagojevich's core argument for saying "no dice" to a Chicago casino. "…Not only did Daley ridicule Blagojevich, he cracked the door open to a compromise on the pivotal issue of city ownership of a Chicago casino to attract support from Republican lawmakers whose votes are needed to make a casino bill veto-proof. "A week after saying he would walk away from a bill that did not include city ownership, Daley was noncommittal on the subject. "…In Springfield, Blagojevich stuck to his guns on a Chicago casino, saying he remains firmly opposed to the mayor's idea but still is refusing to shut the door on casinos outside the city if state lawmakers approve tax and fee increases the governor favors. "…He can't understand why the governor would open the door to new casino licenses in Rockford, Country Club Hills and Waukegan -- on top of the disputed license that the Gaming Board has earmarked for Rosemont -- and slam the door on Chicago. And the mayor finds it ludicrous for the governor to suggest that Chicago doesn't fit the definition of the economically struggling river town that the original gambling bill was designed to help…" |
