Chicago businesses busted in gambling raid

COOK COUNTY, Illinois -- As reported by the SouthtownStar: "Luck was not on the side of a handful of south suburban businesses targeted Saturday in an illegal gambling bust set up by the Cook County sheriff's police.

"Vice officers confiscated nearly 31 video poker machines from 10 businesses that allegedly were making illegal payouts on the machines. Officers seized $6,472 in cash in busts made in nine suburbs, including Markham, Midlothian, Ford Heights and Chicago Ridge.

"And in what appears to be a new trend, gas stations were among the establishments allegedly dabbling in the video poker racket, the sheriff's department said. That included a Mobil gas station in Cicero, where officers seized $2,252 in cash. An employee there declined to comment.

"The sting was the result of a three-month investigation by undercover sheriff's officers.

"Though poker machines are marked 'for amusement only,' users can spend as much as $20 at a time to play. The businesses targeted Saturday allegedly made illegal cash payouts of $10 to $50 to undercover officers posing as customers once they racked up a certain amount of points, the sheriff's police said..."
