Cherokee Plan to Build Casino7 May 2004SALLISAW, Oklahoma – As reported by the Oklahoman: "Cherokee Principal Chief Chad Smith may get the last laugh after all. "Angered by another tribe's recent purchase of Blue Ribbon Downs racetrack, Smith announced Wednesday that his tribe will establish a casino three miles away. "…Cherokee Nation Enterprises also bought an adjacent, 33-room motel and hopes to buy five more acres for parking and possible expansion, Smith said. "…The Cherokee Nation expressed interest in buying Blue Ribbon Downs last October. Two days before the tribe's announced bidding date, a Texas-based company owned by the neighboring Choctaw Nation bought the track for $4.25 million.
