Cherokee Casino Gets State's Nod to Grow18 November 2000SOUTH CAROLINA -- Nov. 18, 2000 -- As reported by the South Carolina State: "The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians has won Gov. Jim Hunt's approval to double the size of the tribe's Harrah's Cherokee Casino, the Carolinas' most popular private attraction. "Expanding the casino would double the number of machines to about 5,000 and reduce the waits to play the slots in hopes of striking it rich. Gamblers pack into the 60,000-square-foot casino, particularly on nights and weekends. "...Hunt and Cherokee Chief Leon Jones signed the agreement in Raleigh this week. The deal still must win approval from the U.S. Department of the Interior, which oversees Native American tribal issues. "The tribe hopes to get that approval in the next few months and is ready to begin building. The tribe pays Harrah's Entertainment an undisclosed sum to run the casino, which has no live dealers -- only machines. "In exchange for letting the casino expand, the agreement requires the establishment of a foundation that will be active in protecting the environment, promoting tribal culture and implementing so-called "smart growth" principles to protect the surrounding area..." |
