Chefs revealed for Southern Gaming Magazine's cook-off

15 August 2011

BILOXI, Mississippi -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- While casinos across the country are focused on jackpots and promotions, there are four properties who have their attention directed towards Biloxi, Mississippi for Southern Gaming Magazine’s Inaugural Casino Cook-off presented by Four Roses Bourbon.

From the time the signature event was announced in early 2011, the first-of-its-kind casino culinary competition has created a buzz among casino chefs throughout the region.

What started as an online recipe contest on the Southern Gaming website, has evolved into one of the industry’s premier cooking competitions. After a two-month voting period, the four chefs who received the most votes qualified to compete in the Grand Champion event taking place on Saturday, September 24, 2011 in Biloxi, Mississippi as part of the 29th Annual Chefs of the Coast Culinary Weekend.

The four chefs who will compete in the iron-chef style competition are Chef Gunter Kilian from DiamondJacks Casino & Resort in Louisiana; Chef Abel Vergara from Seminole Casino Coconut Creek in Florida, Chef Glen Chapman from Casino Aztar in Indiana and Chef Chris Poplin from IP Casino Resort and Spa in Biloxi, Miss.

“This is the single most talented group of casino chefs ever assembled in the South…maybe the country!” Commented event producer and General Manager of Southern Gaming Magazine G. Douglas Dreisbach. “We are looking forward to watching their culinary talents unfold in a live setting at the Grand Champion event.”

The competition will take place on Viking Range Competition platforms that feature the kitchen appliance manufacturer’s top of line kitchen accessories. Each chef will have a pre-determined amount of time to assemble five plates for the panel of judges to critique using different criteria. In the end, the top finisher will walk away with cash, prizes and the honor of being the Casino Culinary King of the South.

In addition to the cooking competition, there will also be food stations representing the entrées prepared by the competing chefs, a Four Roses Bourbon Lounge with special guest and master distiller of the elite bourbon, Jim Rutledge and great music by Sista Jazz and Rochelle Harper.

“We look at this event as a celebration of the culinary talents of the casino chefs.” Added Dreisbach. “The casinos have some of the best chefs in the world so we thought it was appropriate to celebrate their talents with a party that everyone can enjoy.”

Tickets are on sale now for $75 each (or two for $140). For more event information, to purchase tickets and see hotel packages, visit www.southerngaming.com/cookoff or www.chefsofthecoast.org
