Charity event set to kick off 2012 Derby Weekend

5 April 2012

Louisville, KY (PRESS RELEASE) –- Denny Crum & Robert Williamson III’s Derby Poker Championship, a Pro-Celebrity poker tournament and party benefiting Blessings in a Backpack, has become the place to be in Louisville to kick-off the Derby weekend. The annual celebrity gala has announced a new venue - the historic Seelbach Hilton Hotel - as well as a new celebrity co-host of the star-studded event with Bravo’s Real Housewives of Orange County Star, Vicki Gunvalson.

"The historic Seelbach Hilton is a world-class hotel and Vicki Gunvalson is on one of most popular television shows today," said G. Douglas Dreisbach, event producer. "The partnership with each of them will allow us to continue to host a great evening that really kicks off the Derby weekend right. We are very excited," he said.

Now celebrating its fifth year, attendees of the event will be treated to an evening of music, food stations, bourbon and wine tasting accompanied with a premium bar, world-renown chalk artist, Matt Lewis, and more. In addition, the Texas Hold ‘em Poker Tournament is open to the public, allowing poker enthusiasts the opportunity to compete against poker pros and celebrities for cash prizes. Over the past two years, the event has raised over $50,000 for Blessings in a Backpack benefiting Roosevelt Perry Elementary in Louisville, Kentucky.

"This is an event for anyone looking to kick off Derby in style," added Dreisbach. "Whenever you can have fun, hang out with celebrities and benefit an amazing charity all at the same time, you know you are doing something right," he said.

Last year, Nathan Morris, from the R&B Group Boys II Men, and poker pro Dan Shak split the first and second place prize after a showdown for top honors. A few well-known names who have played or attended the event in past years include comedian Ron White, poker champion Phil Hellmuth, best-selling author Nora Roberts, and pro golfer and former Ryder Cup Captain Corey Pavin just to name a few.

The event is sponsored by Jim Beam, Bluff Magazine, Twinspires.com, HogWildPokerLeagues.com, and L&N Federal Credit Union. The event will kick off at 6 p.m. and the poker tournament will begin at 7 p.m.
