Charged poker player shocked

7 June 2007

MANITOBA -- As reported by the CBC News: "A Winnipeg man who was among 63 people charged with gambling offences after raids on three social clubs last week says he can't believe he and his friends were breaking the law.

"Todd Webb says about 50 officers stormed the Barca Club on McMillan Avenue with their guns drawn, ordered everyone to put their hands up and checked everyone's identity.

"...'I was in shock, complete shock. I had no idea what we were doing was wrong, if it's wrong,' he says.

"'Poker's played everywhere. It's just a bunch of friends playing cards. We could have been playing at my house … are we going to get raided [at home] if I bring my friends to play poker? I don't know. It was scary and totally unnecessary, I think.'

"...Poker tournaments must be licensed in Manitoba, and only charities and religious groups can profit from the events.

"...Investigators allege illegal poker tournaments were being held at the Barca Club as well as the Players Club on Corydon Avenue, and Shooters Billiards on Pembina Highway..."
