Challenges expected against UK casino picks

LONDON, England – As reported by Reuters: "Legal challenges and accusations of showing favouritism to foreign investors will be faced when the locations of a new generation of 17 Las Vegas-style casinos--including one giant supercasino--are announced next week.

"Overseas investors such as Malaysia's Genting, Bahamas-based Kerzner and U.S-based MGM Mirage may hit the jackpot with the new wave of casino expansion.

"After half of the country's casino industry was snapped up by foreign investors last year, including companies such as Stanley Leisure and London Clubs, the promised boost to British business will be limited. Rank and privately owned Gala Coral are the biggest remaining UK contenders.

"…But Europe's biggest gambling firm, Gala Coral, raised the stakes on Friday by telling Reuters it might legally challenge any decision that it thinks would lead to unfair competition.

"…Any decision will is likely to face legal challenges from disgruntled regional councils that have lost out in the process. Lawyers say that by giving in to campaigners and allowing just one supercasino, the government has breached competition law, because the supercasino would have no competitors…"
