Celebrities Join Casino Strike Battle22 October 2004ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey -- As reported by the Philadephia Inquirer: "The union representing 10,000 striking casino workers is pulling out some big guns - and big names - in its war with Atlantic City's gaming industry. "In radio ads that started airing Tuesday, actor Danny Glover and NAACP president Kweisi Mfume beseech listeners to boycott the seven casinos in a contract standoff with Local 54 of Unite Here. Workers at the city's five other casinos have contracts or tentative deals. "'Stay away from Atlantic City. But if you've just got to go, don't cross the picket lines,' Glover says in one of the union spots running in Philadelphia, New York City, and throughout New Jersey. 'Remember: Trump, Borgata and Sands - all good. The rest of the casinos - all bad.' "The spots target the Atlantic City Hilton, Bally's Atlantic City, Caesars Atlantic City, Harrah's Atlantic City, Resorts Atlantic City, Showboat Casino-Hotel and Tropicana Casino Resort. "...Glover and Mfume join hip-hop artist Wyclef Jean, U.S. Sen. Jon Corzine (D., N.J.), and the Rev. Jesse Jackson on the list of big names who have offered their support to the union's cause..." |
