Cedar Falls, Iowa Look at Possible Casino Site

WATERLOO, Iowa – As reported by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier: "A downtown riverboat may not necessarily be an `all or nothing' proposition, but all the investment in downtown Waterloo will be for nothing if the boat goes somewhere else.

"That's the opinion of the Cedar Valley Improvement Association, a newly formed organization advocating a gambling boat be located downtown, instead of a proposed site south of Crossroads Center.

"`We've put so much money into downtown development. Why should we go contrary...and put it out in the country?' association co-chair Ed Gallagher Jr. said.

"…Waterloo attorney Gallagher is co-chairing the meeting with Tunis Den Hartog, a retired Waterloo accountant and savings and loan executive.

"…[Gallagher] cited Cedar River/Exchange parks as one possibility, with ample parking due to its proximity to Riverfront Stadium. He also noted that raising the river level in that area for recreational boating was one component of downtown Waterloo's Riverfront Renaissance plan, to be funded in part with a $7.3 million state Vision Iowa grant.

"…Proponents of the site near Crossroads --- Isle of Capri Casinos Inc. and the Black Hawk County Gaming Association --- have suggested casino patrons could be shuttled back and forth between that floating casino and downtown.

"…Isle of Capri and the Black Hawk County Gaming Association, organized by Don Hoth, Robert Fulton and former State Sen. Jim Lind, propose locating a gambling boat on a to-be-constructed man-made lake on private land near Lost Island Adventurepark south of Crossroads and Interstate 380's interchange with U.S. Highways 20 and 218…"
