Cayugas to meet with gov't official1 August 2007NEW YORK -- As reported by the Syracuse Post-Standard: "Cayuga and Seneca counties are planning to meet with Richard Rifkin, Gov. Eliot Spitzer's legal adviser on Indian affairs, on Aug. 16 to discuss the Cayuga Indian Nation's proposed casino agreement with both counties. "Rifkin's influence helped fashion the deal that is running into stony opposition in Seneca County. "He is to meet separately with both counties at a time and place in Syracuse that had yet to be determined, officials said Monday. The Cayugas have also asked to meet with Rifkin on that day, their lawyer said. "...Litigation is the route that Seneca County appears to be taking. Last week, the county's Native American Affairs Committee rejected the casino agreement as long as it provides for the Cayugas to have sovereign tax-free land in either county. "Seneca County supervisors are scheduled to vote on that recommendation on Aug. 14 and the Cayuga County Legislature is holding a special meeting on Monday to further discuss its position on the casino deal, Legislature Chairman George Fearon, R-Springport, said. "...The deal would let the Cayugas build and operate a Las Vegas-style casino at a site to be determined in the state. In exchange, they would agree to a 10,000-acre ceiling on the amount of land they would take off the tax rolls in both counties..." |
