Casinos protest $50 million fee

26 July 2007

PHILADELPHIA -- As reported by the Evening Bulletin: "Philadelphia's two licensed casinos yesterday asked the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board for more time to pay a one-time, $50 million slot machine license fee because of the 'protracted, and highly politicized process of obtaining the local zoning permits required for [casino] construction to begin.'

"Both casinos - Foxwoods (majority owners the Mashantucket Pequots tribe of Connecticut, planned for the south end of Columbus Avenue at the end of Washington Street) and SugarHouse (local investors, planned for Delaware Avenue next to the Ben Franklin Bridge) - asked the board to delay the fee until they have, in Foxwoods' words, 'final and unappealable zoning and building permits required for the construction of [their Philadelphia casinos].'

"The $50 million payment is due tomorrow, but the casinos argue the fee cannot be imposed until they notify the PGCB that their licenses are 'final, binding, nonappealable" and 'not subject to pending legal challenge.'..."
