Casinos Join Gangster Ban Call22 November 2004VICTORIA, Australia -- As reported by the Herald Sun: "Plans to bar suspected gangsters from Victoria's major legal gambling venues received the full support of both casino and horseracing authorities today. "A Crown Casino spokesman said moves by police to exclude at least 80 organised crime figures couldn't be put in place quickly enough. And the Integrity Director of the state's peak horseracing body said bans on certain suspected criminals attending race meetings would be supported by Racing Victoria. "Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner for Crime, Simon Overland, said the move to implement bans was part of a plan to force gangland identities out of the public spotlight. "'We intend to make life difficult for them and strip them of their celebrity status. It will be a form of public shaming, I suppose,' Mr Overland said. "Crown spokesman Gary O'Neill said Crown had long been urging Victoria Police to act quicker to ban suspected gangsters from the world's fifth biggest casino..." |
