Casinos Get Help from New $50 Bill

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "A sharply dressed man slipped three bills into a pile of U.S. currency and watched as the stack was loaded into a cash-counting machine.

"Within seconds, the Cummins Jet Scan had counted the money and dropped the three notes - a ten and two hundreds - into a separate slot. Fakes. Each of them identifiable by eye because a name and date were written on them, signaling that the bills were previously found to be counterfeits.

"But the machine didn't pick up on that. Instead, it noticed subtle differences in the way the notes were printed, marks that were used to track down and convict the money cheat who created the bills.

"The Jet Scan, which can count 1,000 to 1,500 bills per minute, is used in banks, casinos and other businesses that handle large amounts of cash. It's just one tool in the fight against counterfeit currency.

"On Sept. 28, the U.S. Treasury Department will release its latest tool: a redesigned $50 bill, teeming with high-tech security features such as color-changing ink, microprinting and a light-sensitive security thread.

"…'With nearly $700 billion in circulation worldwide, educating people who deal with large cash flows - like casinos and banks - is critical to counterfeit deterrence,' said Tom Ferguson, director of Engraving and Printing.

"With $112 million spent in Atlantic City's slot machines every day and another $19 million at table games, the need to find and remove fake bills is ever-present.

"…Casinos identify counterfeits and those who use the funny money through surveillance film and sophisticated software designed to ferret out fake notes…"
