Casinos exempted from Indiana smoking bill

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana -- As reported by Louisville Courier-Journal: "Local governments could pass smoking bans anytime that are stricter than the state's under an amendment approved today by the House.

"On a voice vote, lawmakers also completely exempted casinos from House Bill 1213, which would prohibit smoking in most workplaces statewide, with exemptions for bars and gambling venues.

"HB 1213 is eligible for a vote by the full House as early as tomorrow.

"As passed by a House committee last week, the bill would have required casinos to designate at least 20 percent of their games as non-smoking. But today's amendment removes all casino-related provisions, except to make them exempt from the smoking ban.

"Originally, the bill also would have given local governments a Dec. 31 deadline for passing smoking bans that are stricter than the state's. But Rep. Peggy Welch, D-Bloomington, said local governments should be able to protect the health of their residents if they choose..."
