Casino Workers Gambled On Negotiations, Won Better Contracts31 January 2005INDIANA – As reported by the North West Times: "Low-wage workers took on mega-sized casino companies and came out with better contracts this week. "Tactics such as forming a unified front and keeping up the pressure on riverboat owners helped, said Ruth Needleman, a professor of labor relations at Indiana University Northwest in Gary. "…The nearly 850 union workers employed by Harrah's East Chicago; Majestic Star casino and Trump Casino and Hotel in Gary; and Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City had been working without contracts for nearly three months. "The new, five-year contracts negotiated this week by Unite Here Local 1 provides an annual 7.6 percent hike in combined wages, benefits and other compensations and guaranteed job security in the event a casino is sold…" |
