Casino wins big at Kansas polls

COLUMBUS, Kansas -- As reported by the Joplin Globe: "Cherokee County voters overwhelmingly approved a casino referendum, with 4,663 votes in favor and 2,054 votes opposed.

"Tuesday's victory margin was about 70 percent in favor to 30 percent opposed, according to the complete but unofficial returns.

"Casino supporters gathered Tuesday night at Crossland Construction Co., where an election watch party became a victory party.

"...Those who said they voted against the issue usually cited religious reasons.

"...Prospective contractors of a state-owned casino in either Cherokee County or Crawford County have until 90 days after the Cherokee County election results are certified by the Kansas secretary of state to submit a proposal for a casino to the Kansas Lottery Commission..."
