Casino Windsor Workers Brace for Long Strike5 April 2004ONTARIO – As reported by the Windsor Star: "With angry Casino Windsor workers bracing themselves for a long strike and no new talks scheduled, some downtown merchants are worried U.S. customers who stay away will be hard to lure back. "'The longer the strike goes on, the more it's going to affect the downtown,' said Chris Ryan, owner of Patrick O. Ryan's on Pitt Street East. 'The longer it goes, the harder it will be to get the clientele back.' "…Rob Rundle, strike marshall for the 3,500 casino workers who walked off the job Friday night, predicted the strike could last as as long as five weeks, hurting downtown businesses, hotels and the casino workers themselves. "…Assistant strike marshall Craig Otto said there was a 'grand canyon' between management and the union, but that determined workers wouldn't be the first to buckle. "…Workers said the main issue wasn't money but respect and the concessions demanded "…Unionized casino workers were on voluntary picket duty on the weekend. Full-time picketing starts Saturday after workers register for picket duty at the Caboto Club Wednesday and Thursday." |
