Casino Taxes Eyed for Public Safety Tools12 September 2006SOUTH CAROLINA – As reported by Myrtle Beach Sun News: "A new tax on casino boats could be used for life-saving medical equipment in Little River and for more police detectives to solve Horry County's violent crimes, the county public safety director said Monday. "The upgrades are part of a wish list the public safety division says it could pay for with an estimated $1.7 million in gambling tax revenue. The seven-item list also includes new fire-rescue equipment, more street-level police officers and more jail guards. "At present, Horry County and the state are still dueling with casino boat operators over collecting the tax. "Florida-based SunCruz Casinos is suing the S.C. Department of Revenue to keep its financial books closed to state tax collectors. "…The casinos attract about 250,000 people a year to the docks and could generate millions of dollars in annual taxes if the county charges the maximum 5 percent allowed by state law…" |
