Casino Supports Gather More Petition Signatures

BARSTOW, California – As reported by the San Bernardino County Sun News: "Proponents of a voter initiative supporting an Indian casino doubled their efforts over the weekend after they learned they needed more signatures to qualify for the Nov. 8 ballot.

"They ended up with 2,069 autographs, more than the required 1,234.

"'We collected 454 signatures of registered voters Saturday and Sunday,' said former City Councilman Manuel Gurule, who heads a committee promoting the ballot measure. 'That gives us 835 signatures above the (new) minimum to give us padding in event some signatures don't qualify.'

"…On June 29 and again on Wednesday, City Clerk JoAnne Cousino told petitioners they would need only 570 signatures, representing 15percent of the 3,798 voters who cast ballots in the last gubernatorial election on Nov. 5, 2002.

"But Santa Monica attorney Frederic Woocher, legal counsel for the petitioning committee, disagreed with her interpretation of the required count as spelled out in the California Election Code, saying they needed at least 1,234 registered voters to sign, a count based on the most recent number of voters in an election.

"…Aug. 12 is the deadline to place the initiative on the November ballot. It would require a simple majority to pass…"
