Casino Strikers Face Money Woes

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "Adrienne Gomez likes to spoil her 2-year-old daughter.

"…But as she continues to march with Local 54 of Unite Here, Gomez is finding it increasingly difficult not only to spoil her daughter, but also to keep pace with the costs of diapers, baby wipes and whole milk.

"…During a busy summer week Gomez and fellow cocktail waitresses can pull in between $500 and $800. For 20 hours of marching, Gomez was making $200 per week until union officials increased that amount to $300 on Friday.

"According to some union members interviewed Monday, $300 is more than they make during one week of work at the casinos.

"…But for some union members who live paycheck-to-paycheck, paying bills is getting tough as the fight over a casino contract continues. The problem grows each week spent on the picket line instead of inside the casinos.

"Coupled with the 50 percent strike-wage raise, union officials also started a Strike Assistance Committee on Saturday.

"…The committee will review a person's bills, W2s and 1040 forms and help them write letters or make telephone calls to stave off incessant bill collectors…"
