Casino staff lack training to spot betting addicts, N.S. Ombudsman says

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia -- As reported by the Canadian Press: "A report from Nova Scotia's Ombudsman has found that staff at the casino in Sydney aren't sufficiently trained to identify potential gambling addicts as required under provincial law.

"The confidential report, dated last month, was compiled in response to a complaint from Paul Burrell of Sydney, a self-described former problem gambler.

"Mr. Burrell insists casino staff should have stopped him from gambling away his life savings between 2000 and 2003.

"Mr. Burrell is in the process of filing a lawsuit against the province in a bid to get his money back.

"...The report concluded that staff at the Sydney casino "rarely, if ever, used" legislation that gives them the authority to bar apparent problem gamblers from playing games of chance..."
