Casino smokes out 'green' builders

PITTSBURGH -- As reported by the Tribune-Review: "Smoking is the 'sticking point' that will keep Majestic Star Casino's Pittsburgh slots parlor from being environmentally certified, owner Don Barden has said.

"The planned North Shore casino will have lots of environmental innovations but it doesn't make business sense to make the building smoke-free or to create isolated smoking areas within the building, Barden wrote in a letter to the Green Building Alliance.

"'For us to declare our facility a non-smoking facility would not be a prudent business decision, considering that a large percentage of our customers are smokers,' Barden wrote in the July 10 letter, released to environmental advocates Tuesday.

"...Majestic Star will follow environmental practices such as energy recovery systems, brownfield and urban redevelopment, enhanced connections to mass transit and sustainable site strategies..."
