Casino Security Remains Visible2 October 2001LAS VEGAS – Oct. 2, 2001 –As reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal: “At Bally's and Paris, they're searching vehicles at the valet parking and asking for identification at the self-park garage. At the MGM Grand, incoming mail is being X-rayed, and all delivery trucks are being searched by security. ”…It's a trend that mirrors what's happening elsewhere, from airports to federal buildings, but unusual for an industry that has spent billions of dollars making their resorts as welcoming and accessible as possible. While security has always been a major part of all casinos, it's now far more visible than ever before. ”…Industry officials say they're only trying to please their customers and that they will continue to evaluate their security needs over time. ”…So far, guests don't seem to mind a little added inconvenience. ”…Other changes are more subtle, and lingering. Employees at Bally's now must show their ID cards before entering the employee parking garage, and they must keep their identification visible at all times when on the property. ”Several officials suggested the new security measures have more to do with psychology than actual safety. ”…Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman said searching trunks will have a cosmetic effect at best. ”…John Bowen, a casino marketing expert, said it's too soon to tell whether the security display will prove permanent. ”…But for now, casinos are erring on the side of caution in deciding how to lure back travel-wary tourists…” |
