Casino School Teaches Dealers' Tricks

2 November 2004

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: " Casino dealers make it look so easy.

"…The Casino Career Institute of Atlantic Cape Community College, on Bacharach Boulevard in Atlantic City, is one area school that turns wannabe dealers into pros.

"All students start with the two-week 'Introduction to Casino Games' course, said instructor Tony Scarpa. That's where they learn how to handle chips, shuffle cards and other basic casino procedures.

"Most people study blackjack first, because few casinos will hire dealers who don't know it, Scarpa said. The students spend the first two weeks learning the basics, and the second two weeks practicing several versions dealt in Atlantic City. At the end, Scarpa gives each student an individual audition in preparation for a job interview.

"…Once they're trained and licensed, poker dealers, for example, can earn between $25,000 and $30,000 per year. Some veteran dealers rake in double that.

"Dealers typically start working part-time and weekends, and the casino gradually adds hours until they have a full-time schedule, Scarpa said.

"…Scarpa reminded the students they will make most of their income from tips, so the better they get along with the players, the more money they'll make.

"But there are rules to learn. Pay winning bets on the left side of the table with your right hand, then switch hands to pay the other side, Scarpa said. That protects the rack of chips from would-be thieves…."
