Casino scammers face sentencing22 November 2006AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Australia Courier Mail: "Five tourists who fleeced the Gold Coast's Jupiters Casino of more than $750,000 in a playing card scam will be sentenced today after they were convicted of fraud by a jury last night. "The four men and a woman had pleaded not guilty to the alleged scam at a mini baccarat table in the members-only Club Conrad section of the casino in 2005, when their trial started three weeks ago. "The four men – Songtao Zhao, Haibin Shao, Zhigang Liu and Jianwen Liu – were remanded back into custody overnight while Wei Shan Liu was granted a continuation of her existing bail until today's scheduled sentence. "A sixth co-accused – Eberihim Abbas – was acquitted of any involvement by the jury and was allowed to walk free from court last night. "The Crown had alleged that in just 50 minutes the group acted together in a playing card substitution ruse to throw games, allowing them to bet large amounts of money with confidence and win…" |
