Casino Revenue for June up on Coast, down along River

29 July 2005

Las Vegas Sun

JACKSON, Mississippi -- State casino revenue for June showed a marked contrast -- up on the coast and down at gambling houses along the Mississippi River.

Coastal casinos reported a take of $108.6 million in June. It was a 9.5 percent increase over June 2004 when gross gambling revenue totaled $99.2 million.

Revenue was down 2.2 percent in the Mississippi River counties, where casinos earned $126.8 million compared with $129.6 million in June 2004.

"I think this is a continuation of the trend on the coast," said Brian Richard, research director at the University of Southern Mississippi's Economic Development Resource Center. "The coast seems to be doing quite a bit better (in revenue growth) than the river counties, probably because of some of the new investment coming on line. The new hotel at the Isle of Capri is the big one now."
