Casino push in Massachusetts stalls30 September 2009BOSTON, Massachusetts -- As reported by the New Bedford Standard-Times: "While the state's legislative leaders remain committed to expanding gambling opportunities, the issue has been bumped off the fast track. "House Speaker Robert DeLeo announced earlier this week that a bill to allow casinos or slot machines probably will not reach the governor's desk until next year. Previously, the speaker had said he was pushing for final legislation this year. "'To say that we'll have a bill on the governor's desk by the end of this (year), I think, may be a difficult task,' DeLeo said after meeting with Gov. Deval Patrick and Senate President Therese Murray on Monday. "The speaker said a legislative hearing on the issue will be conducted next month, but there are still too many unanswered questions — including the number and location of casinos and the tax rate and licensing fees to impose — making it hard to get a bill passed this year..." |
