Casino Pickets Get Limits4 October 2004ATLANTIC CITY -- As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "Six casinos were granted relief Saturday from the thousands of union workers picketing their properties in a contract dispute that saw 11,000 hotel and restaurant workers walk off the job early Friday morning. "Local 54 of Unite Here has been without a contract since Sept. 15 and opted to strike seven of the city's 12 casino properties after a union-imposed deadline expired Thursday night. "Superior Court Judge George Seltzer on Saturday offered a temporary restraining order that he said balanced the union's right to picket and get its message across with the gaming halls' need to proceed with business. "...Cocktail servers, wait staff, housekeeping and other guest-service workers left their posts at the Atlantic City Hilton Casino Resort, Bally's Atlantic City, Caesars Atlantic City, Harrah's Atlantic City, Resorts Atlantic City, Showboat Casino Hotel and Tropicana Casino and Resort. "Seltzer placed no limit on the number of pickets on the Boardwalk in front of Showboat and Hilton, saying pickets weren't blocking pedestrians. He also wouldn't limit the number of pickets at the intersection of Vermont Avenue and Harrah's Boulevard at Harrah's, but said pickets had to stay two feet from the curb. "However, he set specific limits - primarily for pedestrian safety - on the number of pickets and picket locations at other properties..." |
