Casino Petitions Submitted to Three Iowa Counties

IOWA – As reported by the Des Moines Register: "Representatives of Gary Kirke and Isle of Capri Casinos have submitted petitions in each county to put the issue on the general election ballot.

"Although the signatures must still be verified in Dallas County, Kirke's spokeswoman said the group has collected more than enough names to ensure a vote in all three places.

"…Kirke continued the effort Tuesday to build community support for a $150 million casino and 200-room hotel that could be built in Earlham, Waukee or a third, undisclosed Warren County location.

"…A similar commitment will be sought from the Earlham City Council on Monday and the Dallas County supervisors, possibly next week.

"…Under the proposal, the three counties would form a nonprofit group, the Tri-County Regional Inter-Community Agreement for Development, to hold the casino license.

"The counties would share the profits, possibly $3 million each annually, no matter where a casino is built in the region. It is unclear, however, what would happen if voters in one of the three counties reject gambling…"
