Casino Payroll Shows High Diversity24 March 2004UNITED STATES – As reported by the Kansas City Star: "The average casino payroll is more diverse than the U.S. work force, according to an industry study released Tuesday. "Commercial casinos employ a higher percentage of black and female executives, Hispanics and women compared with other businesses in their states and nationwide, according to results of the '2003 Gaming Industry Diversity Snapshot,' prepared by PricewaterhouseCoopers for the American Gaming Association. "…The latest study is based on 2002 data and compares those figures with related statistics in the overall U.S. work force, in the amusement and hotel industry sectors, and among all other employers in the 11 states with commercial casinos, including Missouri. "…The study said the casino industry employed far more service workers than the general economy — 56.4 percent of total casino employees are service workers, compared with 11.7 percent nationwide. The category encompasses some entry-level and other low-level positions and all workers who deal with the public. "When those service positions were subtracted from both totals, the casino industry compared more favorably to the national average in the employment of minority managers, professionals, technical workers and others. "…Overall, the study found, minorities make up 38 percent of the casino industry's nonservice work force, compared with 27.5 percent of the national work force…" |
