Casino opposition fires first shot

WEST VIRGINIA – As reported by the Batesville Herald Tribune: "No bill has emerged yet from the drafting office, but one opposition group fired the opening salvo last week in what could be a divisive war this winter over casino-style gambling.

"A proposal is expected to be drafted in the coming week to allow voters in the dog-and-horse track counties of Jefferson, Ohio, Hancock and Kanawha counties to rule on table games there.

"'It's time to put the brakes on the expansion of gambling in West Virginia,' said John Carey, executive director of the West Virginia Values Coalition.

"'We call on West Virginia's families, churches and communities to stand against gambling expansion now.'

"…His group, active in all 55 counties, is insisting on a statewide referendum, as opposed to leaving the issue in the hands of the four counties directly affected…"
