Casino Opponents: Ho-Chunk Casino Won't Happen28 September 2005ILLLINOIS – As reported by the Northwest Indiana News: "Members of an anti-casino group recently left a meeting with the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs confident that land the Ho-Chunk nation has purchased in Lynwood will never be given gaming rights. "Last week, eight members of the group Citizens For Our Community made the trip to Washington, D.C., to discuss their case with legislators who would have a say in gaming activities involving Native American tribes. "'The success of this meeting was just beyond our imagination,' said Carl Smits Jr., the group's president. "…At issue is Native American tribes crossing state lines to acquire land that eventually would be placed in federal trust, with the ultimate goal of acquiring gaming rights to open casinos, Smits said. "That, he contended, is what the Ho-Chunk nation has planned for land purchased in Lynwood. "…Bolstered by the reception in Washington, Smits said he would bring the issue back to the Village Board and Mayor Eugene Williams, with the request they stop pursuing the casino endeavor and look toward other means of economic development…" |
