Casino Opponents Face Off with Politician

HOMEWOOD, Indiana – As reported by the Northwest Indiana Times: "Armed with 6,000 petition signatures, opponents of a proposed Lynwood casino took their fight Thursday to the Homewood office of U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.

"Prior to holding a press conference outside the entrance to the Chicago congressman's 2nd Congressional District office, members of the group Citizens For Our Community met privately with Jackson to relay their concerns.

"…Group spokesman Randall Blakey charged Jackson and Lynwood Mayor Russ Melby with ignoring, not only the thousands of signatures, but phone calls from residents who Blakey said would be adversely affected by the planned 432-acre Ho-Chunk casino.

"It also was a slap in the face that elected officials chose not to open the issue up for public debate, Blakey said, alleging the plan was concocted largely under the radar of south suburban voters 'who have been sleeping.'

"…The group has been aggressively fighting the casino plans, posting lawn signs and a billboard along Interstate 394. They also have sought help from officials in neighboring cities, towns and villages, asking council members to adopt resolutions in opposition…"
