Casino Opponents Applaud Illinois House Bill1 November 2005ILLINOIS – As reported by the Northwest Indiana Times: "As reported by the A bill to eliminate casinos that just passed the Illinois House of Representatives may never even get called to the Senate floor. "That has not dissuaded gambling opponents -- among them those who came to the forefront following a planned Native American casino in Lynwood -- from declaring that a victory of sorts already has been won. "The fact the bill came out of a House committee and made it to the floor was perceived by some as a surprise. Then the full House approved the bill late last week and casino opponents hailed the move as an unexpected triumph. "Carl Smits Jr., president of the anti-gambling group Citizens For Our Community, which has been combating the Ho-Chunk nation's plans for the state's first land-based casino in Lynwood, said he did not expect the bill to get this far…" |
