Casino operators oppose Detroit's casino tax hike plan

18 April 2011

DETROIT, Michigan -- Detroit's Mayor expressed his desire to increase taxes at casinos and it was not warmly received, ML Live reported.

The city's casino operators were unanimous in their upset, pointing out their industry already faces the highest tax in the state, the report said.

Mayor Dave Bing has proposed hiking the city's tax another 3 percent, which would create 20 million in revenue and go some way towards filling the $155 million deficit in the city's budget, the report explained.

The casinos say the timing of his proposal is awful because they face increased competition from neighbouring states, ML Live reported.
