Casino Opens in Antigua

30 April 2003

"Anthony Velardi, the brain behind the facility, is no stranger to casinos. Velardi was the first man to run a casino in the country with operations at St. James' Club then Mamora Bay and then Castle Harbour Casino at Michael's Mount.

"Velardi said the opening of the casino represents the end of a four-year journey. He singled out the government of Antigua & Barbuda and Prime Minister Lester Bird for granting a number of concessions allowing the birth of Antigua's premier facility. Not only will the facility offer fine dining, but it houses a casino.

"...Prime Minister Lester Bird describes the facility as `holistic,' noting it can hold its own with those in Las Vegas and Atlantic City.

"...Tourism Minister Molwyn Joseph congratulated Velardi on his achievement but used the opportunity to highlight three symbolisms of the Grand Princess and to remind the gathering that his government was severely criticised when it opened Jolly Harbour for development.

"...Grand Princess Casino and Sports Book features an adult nightclub, sports bar and sports book, spa, and executive suites."
