Casino Neighbors Warn of Problems

DANBURY, Connecticut – As reported by the Danbury News-Times: "When bingo started at the Mashantucket Pequot reservation in Ledyard, that wasn't a problem, Nicholas Mullane, first selectman of North Stonington, told 120 people gathered in City Hall for a casino forum.

"'When the casino came, it was a very different situation,' Mullane said.

"That's when the divorces started. The job losses. The embezzlement. The bankruptcies and the domestic violence.

"…The forum was called by Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton to answer questions about casinos in the face of the Bureau of Indian Affairs' recognition of the Kent-based Schaghticoke Tribe on Jan. 29.

"…People attending the forum passed questions to the panel of elected state officials, elected town officials and anti-casino advocates.

"Mullane was answering a question about the Pequot and Mohegan Sun casinos' impact on his town when he spoke about problem gamblers.

"…He said costs are up for police, ambulances and for DUI enforcement, and it isn't just North Stonington that is hurt.

"…Both Mullane and Wesley Johnson, former first selectman of Ledyard, said the casino brought no economic development to their towns…"
