Casino Money Funds College Scholarships

INDIANA – As reported by the Indiana Post-Tribune: "Matthew Muta, 18, loaded up a relative's pickup last Saturday and chased double yellow lines to West Lafayette.

"Soon, Kasey Poracky hits the highway as well — she'll go to Bloomington.

"The Hammond teens, children of city homeowners, will attend college without having to pay any tuition for four years.

"They lucked out, getting selected for the first class of Mayor Thomas McDermott's College Bound Scholarship awards.

"…So far, 117 students have been given the scholarships. City consultant Tom Dabertin said the city recently rushed off payments to bursar offices across the state.

"Hammond is the only Northwest Indiana city to use casino dollars to send kids to college.

"At first the unique program, based on a privately funded mirror program in Kalamazoo, Mich,. raised concerns among State Board of Accounts auditors, but examiner Bruce Hartman said his workers now understand and agree with McDermott's theory that paying for families to send kids to college will result in a better Hammond…"
