Casino looks for housing solution31 July 2007CONNECTICUT -- As reported by the Connectitcut Day: "Executives at Foxwoods Resort Casino know more housing is needed to accommodate the casino's growing workforce. That point became clear in a meeting last week between casino executive's and The Day editorial board. "More importantly, it appears the casino owners, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, is exploring ways to do something about it. "Local officials have been quietly critical of the tribe's silence on the essential issue of housing. Foxwoods is undergoing an expansion that will require adding 2,000 more workers to the roughly 10,000-employee workforce. That has raised the question: Where will they all live? "Studies have documented a significant housing shortage in the region, particularly in the rental market. The affordable-housing problem is especially acute. "...Foxwoods President John A. O'Brien told The Day that the tribe has talked to developers about making tribal land holdings available for housing developments. "...Town officials, for their part, have to recognize working people need a place to live and that the failure to provide it could stall the region's economic growth..." |
