Casino Layoffs Blamed on Border Tie-Ups7 January 2004CANADA – As reported by the Windsor Star: ``Casino Windsor has laid off 100 employees amid a dwindling customer base and plunging revenues. ``In the past two years, gross revenues dropped by about $85 million and daily attendance has dropped 50 per cent. ``Workers who lost their jobs include those in food and beverage, culinary, slot technicians, casino finance and engineering. "This is a very difficult situation that we've been looking at for some time, but I can tell you there is never a good time to lay someone off," Keith Andrews, vice-president of corporate affairs, said Monday. ``…Andrews said world events over the past three years caused a steady decline in business, but nothing as devastating as border traffic tie-ups. ``…Ken Lewenza, president of CAW Local 444, called the layoffs a 'last resort' and said he couldn't be critical of the way it was handled…" |
