Casino issues dominate Barstow politics

BARSTOW, California – As reported by the San Bernardino County Sun: "A wild year in city politics that featured a successful recall of one councilman, the sudden resignation of another, and a divisive casino measure, wraps up with a crowded City Council race.

"Competing casino projects that could mean millions for this struggling High Desert city highlight the political backdrop, along with the more-usual issues of growth, economic development and crime.

"Nine candidates are running for two seats, one held by four-term incumbent Helen Runyon, and the other vacant after the abrupt resignation earlier this year of Gloria Darling.

"Barstow has mainly been in the news as three tribes seek to build casinos that officials are counting on to inject much-needed economic life into the city.

"…The casino drama, which stretched from Barstow to Sacramento to Washington, is the issue that sets the race apart.

"The candidates include former Mayor Manuel Gurule, who led the charge on Measure H, which was widely perceived as an effort to squeeze out a proposal from out-of-county tribes…"
